If you've followed me for any length of time, you doubtless will have noticed that I only wear black. There's the odd bit of white, grey or a hint of navy blue. But as a rule I'm in head to toe black, from eyeliner to boots.
Having a smaller wardrobe means that I value everything in it on a much deeper level. All my clothes are perfect pieces that I adore. Most of the time I wear a long button up shirt with tights, or a black dress, or workout clothes (old black leggings and a black t-shirt.) These are my favored looks.
Being a minimalist does not mean you have to wear the same outfit every day, or squeeze into worn out garments which don't fit. Part of the secret to keeping a wardrobe pared back is regular clear outs and replacements. If I kept too small clothes or those with holes in then they wouldn't get worn. Sticking to the 'one in, one out' rule ensures clutter never creeps up on me.
A lot of minimalists prefer colourless outfits. People often ask me if wearing black is a requirement for living a pared back lifestyle and of course it isn't. But it is a good colour to opt for if you are seeking to reduce your belongings.
If you are a minimalist who prefers lime green, or neon pink, or rainbow striped clothes then don't let anyone question that! Wear what makes you happy. For me personally, that happens to be black.
Black is just practical. Sticking to one colour makes a small wardrobe feel more expansive. Everything goes together, everything matches and everything is simple. It takes me seconds to pick out an outfit, giving me more options with less decision fatigue.
It means I shop less- there are only so many times you can ask 'does this come in black?' before retail assistants are ready to stab you. I do two substantial shopping trips each year, otherwise only buying anything essential.
If a garment doesn't come in black then I know it won't get worn, however beautiful it is. So, I choose simple, monochrome clothes every time and liven them up with my tattoos, jewellery and makeup. In my opinion, this looks effortlessly elegant and cohesive with little effort. Fewer outfit changes are needed throughout the day - I just switch my shoes or coat for a different context.
My preference for black clothes comes down to how it fits my lifestyle. I like everything around me to be cohesive, uncomplicated and not distracting. Sticking to one colour means that is possible - I can maintain my interest in style without having to compromise on other areas.
